SWAY STUDIO (www.swaystudio.com) has announced the addition of Director/Digital Cinematographer John Allardice to its staff. The move reflects continued growth for the company, which has expanded its staff from five to thirty in under two years. Allardice comes over from Digital Domain, where, for the past four years, he ran previsualization on all spot projects and contributed to a fair amount of features. Allardice’s first projects for SWAY are a Pontiac campaign and a Chevy spot, both of which he co-directed with company Owner/Creative Director Mark Glaser. He will direct a second Pontiac campaign this month.
“John is an encyclopedia of cinematographic styles and techniques and he has the talent to translate that into the CG world.” said Glaser. “Applying those skills to our previs work results in brilliant blueprints for our live action and cg production projects.”
Allardice brings a top-notch pedigree to his new position: in recent years, he has presided over previs on virtually all of director David Fincher’s spot projects. He also has extensive experience working with other notable directors such as Noam Murro, Mark Romanek, David Kellogg, Guy Ritchie, and Filip Engstrom (formerly of Stylewar), with whom he worked on the 2005 Sony Dreams project, Flight. “Because of his background in live action, John sees each job from a shared perspective with the agency,” said SWAY Executive Producer Shira Boardman. Indeed, Allardice got his start in live action, with training that was broad and hands-on. “In the UK, there’s not enough work for an artist to hone only one skill,” he explained. “I started doing miniatures and pyrotechnics, then editorial, camerawork, and so on. It all helps with my previsualization of the job. I approach effects with the goal of achieving the greatest realism possible.”
